The AI Thesis: Why Does It Actually Matter for Businesses?

Past the hype cycle, there's a real, narrow reason AI matters for most businesses right now. Here's what it is, and what it isn't.

It's easy to tune out AI coverage as noise: every week brings a new model, a new benchmark, a new claim that everything is about to change. Underneath the noise, there's a much narrower and more concrete thesis for why this matters to an ordinary business, one that has nothing to do with keeping up with trends.

The thesis is this: for the first time, software can reliably do a class of work that used to require a person reading, judging, and writing in natural language: reading a support ticket and drafting a reply, summarizing a contract, triaging an inbox, extracting structured data from a messy document. That's a genuinely new capability, not an incremental one, and it changes the economics of any process built around that kind of work.

What actually changed

Before large language models, automating language-shaped work meant either hiring more people or writing brittle rules (if the email contains this phrase, do that) that broke the moment real-world language varied even slightly. Neither scales cleanly. Language models handle the variation (sloppy phrasing, typos, unusual structure) well enough to be useful in production, which is a different bar than being useful in a demo.

That's the whole shift. It's not that AI is generically smart or that it will run your business for you. It's that one specific, previously-expensive capability got cheap enough to build real systems around.

Where the thesis doesn't apply

Plenty of business problems aren't language-shaped at all (inventory optimization, physical logistics, pricing), and bolting an AI feature onto them is usually theater, not substance. The businesses getting real value are the ones that identified a specific, recurring, language-heavy bottleneck (support volume, document review, lead qualification) and built narrowly around it, not the ones that bought a platform because it had 'AI' in the name.
